Artist Statement
Every day I wake up knowing I need to draw; I need to get something down on paper. There is excitement in drawing, opening my sketch book and creating new images. It's interesting how the marks being placed on the paper add up to the final render. I believe an image has power, it can tell you a story, send a message, or leave you clueless. Art and life are similar; both try to say something and I want to capture both. I never really know what I am going to draw next; It's like a mystery novel. The drawing finds itself as I draw it. Things unknown and mysterious captivate me; to think and figure out what something is. I like to make people look closer. Some, not all of my work, consists of very tiny marks. The amount of distance placed between the viewer and the work plays a significant factor, because the real detail is seen when you come up close. People will only come close to something if they don't know what they are looking at. Wonder takes over; and causes the viewer to approach for a closer look. I want the viewer to get to know and almost study the marks. This task can be difficult, there are so many marks and are so small that it can become overwhelming. There is only so much that can be seen until the point is reached that you need a break or rather don't want to look anymore. This depends on how much the curiosity is heightened.
